Fat Loss After 40: How To Flip Your Approach To Get The Scales Moving

September 11, 20255 min read

Let’s be real for a second.

If you’re over 40 and feeling like your body has staged a full-on rebellion, you’re not imagining it. The late-night Googling, the clean eating, the portion shrinking, the workouts, the “just keep going” talks you give yourself, and still, the scales don’t budge.

And the world’s response? “Just try harder.”
Sorry, but no. That advice is not only insulting, it’s negligent.

Your Effort Isn't The Problem

I can’t tell you how many times women have sat across from me, almost whispering:
“I don’t understand… I’m doing everything right. Why isn’t it working?”

And I want to shout from the rooftops: it’s not you.

Women have been dismissed for decades. Told we’re hormonal, dramatic, even “hysterical.” Our struggles with weight and energy have been brushed aside like we’re making a fuss.

Meanwhile, the reality is: your metabolism, hormones, thyroid, stress levels, gut health; they all matter. And pretending they don’t is like telling a car that’s run out of petrol to “just drive harder.”

My Thoughts On GLP-1s

You’ve probably heard the buzz about GLP-1 meds; Ozempic, Wegovy, all the rest. They’re everywhere right now, from magazines to TikTok. And here’s the thing: I’m not here to judge. For some women, they really do have a place, and they can genuinely help.

But here’s why they sit uneasily with me: we don’t actually know what the long-term impact is going to be. Sure, the weight might come off in the short term, but at what cost? These drugs can slow down digestion, mess with appetite signals, and even affect how your body absorbs nutrients. None of that feels like a recipe for lasting health.

To me, GLP-1s are a tool, not a plan. A bit like putting duct tape over a leaky pipe... handy if you need it in the moment, but you wouldn’t want to build your whole plumbing system around it. And when it comes to something as precious as your body, I think women deserve more than duct tape.

And What About HRT?

Ah, HRT... another hot topic. Some women absolutely love it, and I’ve seen how much it can change lives. Better sleep, steadier moods, more energy… and when that happens, it can feel like getting a piece of yourself back.

But here’s what I want to be really clear about: HRT isn’t a magic bullet for weight loss. It might support how you feel day-to-day, and that’s amazing, but it doesn’t usually shift the stubborn pounds on its own.

Why? Because weight is influenced by so many other things too; metabolism, thyroid, stress, insulin resistance, gut health… the list goes on. If those pieces are out of balance, HRT alone won’t fix the bigger picture.

So am I for or against HRT? Neither. I’m for whatever genuinely helps you. But I’ll always be honest and say: it’s not the golden ticket to fat loss that many women are led to believe.

Why I’m So Obsessed With Testing

This is where my inner nerd comes out (sorry not sorry).
I LOVE testing. Because for me, testing = clarity.

The reason it’s so important to me is because I’ve seen too many women blaming themselves when nothing they try works. They’re eating well, exercising, cutting calories, and still stuck. Without testing, they’re told to “just try harder”, and I can’t stand seeing that.

When we test, it takes the shame out of the picture. Suddenly it’s not “you’re lazy” or “you’re doing it wrong.” It’s: your thyroid is underperforming or your stress hormones are through the roof or your body isn’t handling blood sugar the way it should. And that completely changes the conversation.

I’ve seen how a single test result can flip the whole approach. Like realising a woman doesn’t need to restrict more, she needs support for her thyroid. Or that the answer isn’t more willpower, it’s calming a stress response that’s keeping her body in “survival mode.”

That’s why testing matters so much to me. It lets me stand up for women who’ve been dismissed, and say: “You’re not failing. Your body is telling us something, and we’re finally going to listen.”

Because once we listen, we can stop the endless guessing game. And that, to me, is the most powerful step toward real, lasting change.

My Philosophy in a Nutshell

Here’s what I believe, deep down:

  • Women don’t need more willpower.

  • They don’t need another diet.

  • They need someone who will actually listen, take them seriously, and look beneath the surface.

For me, weight loss isn’t about punishment or perfection. It’s about freedom. It’s about waking up with energy, feeling confident in your own skin, and reconnecting with you again.

That’s why I do what I do; because women deserve better than quick fixes and generic advice.

Nourish Your Body, Lose Weight For Good

Like many women, you may be struggling to shift the weight despite dieting and taking care to consume fewer calories than they burn. This is a common experience for women over 35, and it's rooted in how your hormones and metabolism change over time.

Restricting calories too much actually further damages the metabolism and hormones, and an entirely different approach is required to heal your metabolism and lose weight without experiencing rebound weight gain.
