What Happens in a Nutritional Therapy Consultation?

Before the first consultation, I get my lovely clients to fill out a questionnaire and food diary. It can seem a little daunting because there are a lot of questions! But they help to save time in the first session, so that we can get into the important stuff!

Whether your consultation is in clinic or over Skype, they generally follow the same structure.

In the session, I’ll ask questions based on what you wrote in the questionnaire so that I end up with a really good understanding of what it’s like to be you. Why do I need to know this? Because if I understand what you are going through and what you have been through, then I’ll be much better able to work out what on earth caused your health issues in the first place.

Once I’ve discovered everything there is to know about you, I’ll explain to you what I think may be going on inside your body and quite often at this point, I’ll let you know what tests would be useful for gaining further information.

Then we’ll discuss some dietary changes that will be targeted at correcting any suspected (or confirmed) imbalances. I usually make lifestyle and supplement suggestions too.

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Session

Firstly, prepare properly. Fill out the questionnaire as thoroughly as you can. I recommend re-reading it a day or so later because our perception of our symptoms can change daily. You also need to be honest in your food diary. If you ate 10 ice creams, then write down ‘10 ice creams’! I don’t judge; I’ve seen it ALL and I’m no angel myself (sometimes).

Secondly, make an effort to understand why I make the recommendations that I make. I find that if my clients understand my reasoning then they are much more compelled to follow my advice. I make every effort to explain the whys. All you need to do is tell me if you don’t understand.

Thirdly, come back! If you want to make a real difference to your life, then you need to changes habits. You can’t do that in just one session, or even two sessions. Most practitioners sell individual consultations, but I don’t. I sell my sessions in packages, because I want to see results that will last. Also, I only want to work with people who are committed to improving their health and booking a series of sessions is a clear sign that you are.
